Cheryl and I have been fans of Josh Garrels ever since we first heard him perform an impromptu set in the food court at the Cornerstone Festival in 2002. Since then we’ve seen him perform a couple of times and have been faithful in buying whatever he’s released. (If you haven’t seen his DVD “Seven Stars” yet, I highly recommend it!)
We were among the first to buy his debut album “Stone Tree” in all its homebrew glory. As his first effort at recording his folk/hiphop/blues blend of music it was somewhat rough sounding. His production quality has improved over his past two releases, but “Stone Tree” stands out as a favorite of ours after all this time. Unfortunately the album has been out of print for some time.
In anticipation of a new studio release later this year, Garrels is making his first album available for free download. It’s been touched up and edited due to the heavy use of sampling (legal restrictions), and a couple songs have been removed. But if you want to pick up a free album by an up and coming artist, there you go.
Unfortunately my favorite track from the album – ‘New Day” – didn’t make the cut. So, I’ve included it here for your listening pleasure. Get hip to it!

thank you for writing this about josh…I’ve been listening to him for a few years now and have all his stuff! i LOVE the dvd, and especially “new day,” like you mentioned. that song is AMAZING! do you know where i could get it on audio, instead of just video? i came late to the scene and missed the full album release of stone tree….
