Vatican: It’s OK to believe in aliens

The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, says that the vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones.

In an interview published Tuesday by Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, Funes says that such a notion “doesn’t contradict our faith” because aliens would still be God’s creatures.

The Vatican has a chief astronomer? Seriously? I swear, somewhere Galileo must be spinning in his grave.

While this does little to change my own thoughts about the possibility of life on other planets, it sure does go a long way toward explaining why this guy is so darn creepy.

Ahhh… so in a galaxy far far away, that would make the pope, the evil emperor Darth Sidious?

It’s true!! Those circles don’t do much for him.

That’s cool the “chief astronomer” said that. I’ve heard a lot of secular scientists even deny that possibility.

not that i need to say it, but that is nuts. did anyone hear what the pope (aka, creepy guy) did while he was here US side in boston? i was actually impressed by his wisdom. he sat down with victims of all the crap that went on up there and just listened. when they were finished he gave no excuses, just said, what happened to you was aweful and wrong and i am so sorry. impressive i think.

To quote a movie with all that space out there if we were alone it sure would be a waste.

i’m pretty sure galileo was “pardoned”, post-mortem. the church has a long list of post-mortem pardonings :) but, his ideas were being supported in the church before him by the likes of cardinal baronius (who said “the bible tells us how to get to heaven, now how the heavens work” ;) and of course copernicus.

Are the “giants” in Genesis human?..nope. Is Satan human?..nope! Do people “spin in their graves”?..Where their fire is never put out! - Mark 9. I am tormented in this flame - Luke 16
