Today’s offering, the classic 1965 performance of “Like a Rolling Stone” at City Hall in Newcastle. Dylan had been warmly received at the festival the previous two years and was scheduled to be the Sunday night headliner at the 1965 festival.
When Dylan performed the set with an electric guitar and accompanied by a blues band, well… The crowd’s reaction is now the stuff of legend. Heckles of “Judas” can be heard coming from the crowd, as well as a great deal of booing. Which prompted Dylan to instruct his band to play the song “real f—ing loud!” (That exchange can best be heard on this clip from the documentary “No Direction Home.”)
Dylan “goes electric” – one of the defining moments in American music.
