Between appointments yesterday I ducked into a local Barnes & Noble to do a little browsing and maybe get a Christmas idea or two. I was a bit shocked to hear them playing Over the Rhine’s Snow Angels over the store’s stereo system. I made it a point to go out of my way to find out who was responsible and commend them on their taste.
That reminded me to mention the album here.
Snow Angels is the second Christmas album that Over the Rhine has released. It actually came out last year in limited print and iTunes download, but has recently been picked up by a major label for distribution and rereleased for this holiday season.
It is mostly original material with the exception of two completely overhauled holiday favorites (“Oh Little Town of Bethlehem”, and “Jingle Bells”). It compliments the band’s more recent – jazzier – sound quite nicely. And it’s quite possibly the sexiest Christmas album ever produced. It’s available in stores now including, apparently, Barnes & Noble.
