Yankees land Teixeira!

It’s being reported that the New York Yankees have reached a preliminary agreement with All-Star first baseman Mark Teixeira. The deal with pay him $180 million over eight years.

The Yankees seem determined to gobble up every high-profile free agent on the market. Could Manny be next? 😆

  1. i am shocked..i know that sounds weird but they weren’t in the conversation at all and then boom they are able to do something the red sox couldn’t do once again….closing the deal…i am sure I will get some comments about that but its ok cause is true…

  2. dear God. when is enough enough?!?! i honestly didn’t want the sox to put the money & years into a contract w/ teix, when we dont’ even need a 1B, but for him to go to NYY makes me wish they’d gotten him. this is messed up.

oh, and take manny! have LOTS of fun with him 🙂

  3. Unfortunately team chemistry is not a free agent this year.

I wasn’t sure why the sox wanted him my guess is to replace Lowell next year.

Baseball needs a salary cap imo

I hate Manny. Until the nanosecond he shaves his dreads and puts the NY cap on his head. Then I love him.

And the Sox haven’t won anything without him yet. 😉

I’m all for it. Have fun getting the players union to go along with it.

    I freakin hate the yankees.

Dude, the trade for A-Rod ultimately brought you Soriano. And they got C.C. out of your division. What more do you want? 😆

  5. i appreciate manny’s hitting and the role it played in ’04. and i was a manny defender against the manny haters throughout new england until last season when he acted like a mix of a thug and a little brat. it was just too much to have any respect left for him.

but what i really want is for yankees fans to admit that spending half a billion dollars (and this is before manny) in the offseason in order to try and win a championship takes some of the wind out of the sails, that it isn’t as special or meaningful if management is going insane like that. it’d be like celebrating an american military victory over switzerland.

but i agree with john in that you can’t buy chemistry. the rays and sox will both have the upper hand there. there has been something in the bronx that has made all these massive egos not be able to coelesce into a championship team this decade. perhaps the curse of a-rod? 🙂 no but seriously, he’s a postseason sucker. appletini drinking, purple lip gloss wearing, hand slapping suckaface!

  6. @Tim: What do you want from me? I hate the way the Yanks spend money on long term contracts for soon-to-be washed up talent. I have always been a critic of their “fantasy baseball” approach to assembling a team in recent years. I have always said that the magic of the late-90s run was the fact that the majority of those guys were home grown talent. And I support implementing a salary cap.

But I’m not ever going to stop being a Yankees fan. And I’m going to enjoy it when they win regardless of how it happens – if it ever happens again during Cashman’s tenure (doubtful).

And the Yankees will be spending less on payroll this year than they did last. So that’s gotta count for something right? 😆

@Dee: Yes. But we’re done with him how. Want him back? 😆

  7. For the record, I didn’t like the Soriano signing. I think that in a year or two we’re going to hate ourselves for overpaying an aging streaky power hitter thats all or nothing ala Sammy Sosa with terrible defense who is totally injury prone. He has the strange ability to be one of the best or worst hitters in the league depending on which streak he’s on.

A guy like Tex would make waayyyy too much sense for the cubs to pursue. I mean really, who would want a guy that hits for power and average and plays decent defense? He’d have made a great splash to replace D-Lee who declining fast and will probably leave as a free agent at the end of this coming season.

As for CC, I didn’t mind him with the Brew Crew, because him being there meant it would strap them enough for $$ that they’d be unable to field a competitive team around him. I’ll take facing him a few times a year if it means that they suck.

  8. i am just curious if the Red sox had sign Tex (which they didn’t cause they could close the deal….typical) would it be fair to say they spend too much money…i believe they wanted to pay him somewhere in the 160-170 million range….
be honest you would have loved it just as much as yankee fans are loving it

  9. i would have been glad…b/c it would have kept the yankees from getting him. but like i said, i don’t think it was a smart idea to do 8 years for that kind of money, i don’t think it is on ANYONE. but, if you’re going to do it, do it for a guy whose proven it in your own clubhouse. i like them re-signing guys like pedroia. i’m all for that. it helps team chemistry. as far as the money, yeah we all know boston spends way too much, too…but they’re 4th right now in spending, not 2nd. and even when they were 2nd behind nyy, there were literally a dozen teams whose payroll was less then the huge gap between boston and nyy. but, as has been pointed out several times, the spending hasn’t worked yet, so who cares. i just think this is way too much, it’s beyond excessive.
