Today marks the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street’s debut on PBS. If you grew up in America, chances are you have watched hundreds if not thousands of hours of Sesame Street. Both as a child and with your own children.

What are some of your favorite Sesame Street memories? Who are your favorite characters? Do any celebrity appearances stick out in your mind?

  1. watched it as a kid. now watching with my son. he likes elmo and cookie monster.

i remember liking the skit where Grover is a waiter and the customer keeps complaining that there is a fly in his soup.

also, the piano player who kept forgetting the words to songs and would bang his head on the piano.

  2. GROVER!! I’ll admit that I have a strong dislike of Big Bird. Isaac and Leah love to shout out “Hello Everybodeeeeee!” much like Grover. He just had the most entertaining skits in my opinion. And I still remember when James Taylor was on and sang with the kids. There’s definitely a few clips here and there that they reuse from when I was a kid too. Whatever happened to the “yippers” (they were like aliens)? Loved them! 🙂

  3. Love the Yippers too. I also appreciate Bert’s cynicism.

One of my favorite things about Sesame Street is how everyone sings a completely different version of the song that plays when there are three people doing the same thing, and one who is doing something else. EVERYONE sings different lyrics.
